The Women’s Building

The Women’s Building at 3543 18th Street has been a women-led community center since 1979, one of the first of its kind in the country. It houses nonprofits and offers services in several languages.

The building is best known for its exterior, covered by the Maestrapeace mural, painted in 1994 by seven women muralists and a team of volunteers. The mural wraps two faces of the building with images of women from across history and cultures, from Guatemalan weavers to the poet Audre Lorde. It is one of the most elaborate murals in a neighborhood defined by them.
