The Dutch Windmill stands at the far northwest corner of Golden Gate Park, near Ocean Beach. It was built in 1903 to pump groundwater for irrigating the park, which had been created by stabilizing windswept sand dunes. A second windmill, the Murphy Windmill, stands at the southwest corner. Electric pumps later replaced them, and both fell into disrepair before being restored.
At the windmill’s base is the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, planted with thousands of tulips that bloom in late winter and early spring. Cross the Great Highway from here and you reach Ocean Beach and the Pacific, the western edge of the city and the end of the cross-park walk.
