A small herd of American bison has lived in a paddock along John F. Kennedy Drive since 1891, when the park brought them in at a time the species was near extinction across the West. The current herd descends from animals given to the city over the years, including some donated in the 1980s during Dianne Feinstein’s time as mayor.
The bison graze a long fenced meadow near the western end of the park. They are most active and visible in the morning. There is no charge; pull off the path and watch from the fence line.
