Things to Do in San Francisco on a Monday

The de Young, the Legion of Honor, and the Exploratorium are all closed on Mondays. The day still has a $5 jazz night on Haight Street, a solo theater series that has run since 1989, and one of the longest-running DJ nights in the city.

Museums Open on Mondays

SFMOMA is open Mondays from 10am to 5pm (adults $30, visitors 18 and under free), which makes it the day’s main art museum option. The California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park is open every day of the week, 9:30am to 5pm Monday through Saturday. The Asian Art Museum is open Mondays from 10am to 5pm; its closed days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Monday Night Marsh

The Marsh at 1062 Valencia Street in the Mission has run Monday Night Marsh since 1989: three solo works in progress, about 20 minutes each, most Mondays except holidays. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets are through The Marsh, and there is a pay-what-you-can livestream.

Jazz, Blues, and Motown

The DeLuxe at 1511 Haight Street (the former Club Deluxe) hosts the DeLuxe Jazz Collective every Monday with a $5 cover. Madrone Art Bar at 500 Divisadero Street has run Motown on Mondays, a DJ night built on Motown and soul, since 2009; it is 21 and over, and the current schedule is on the bar’s calendar. In North Beach, The Saloon at 1232 Grant Avenue, a bar operating since 1861, has live blues seven nights a week, with afternoon sets from 4 to 8pm and evening sets from 9:30pm.

Free Morning Hours in Golden Gate Park

The Japanese Tea Garden is free for everyone on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 to 10am, and free anytime for San Francisco residents with proof of residency. The San Francisco Botanical Garden is free for all visitors every day from 7:30 to 9am.

Free Walking Tours

SF City Guides, a program of the San Francisco Public Library, runs free volunteer-led walking tours every day of the year, with more than 80 routes across the city. Tours take about 1.5 to 2 hours; register on their site.
