Chotto Matte

📍 💰 $$$ 🍽️ Japanese

The Verdict

"Go before 8pm for the food experience. After 9pm on weekends it becomes more of a scene. The robata grill is the strongest part of the menu. Reservations are a must."

What you need to know

Chotto Matte opened in San Francisco in October 2023. It is the seventh location of a global chain founded by Kurt Zdesar in 2013, focused on Nikkei cuisine — the Japanese-Peruvian fusion that developed through Japanese immigration to Peru in the 20th century. The 14,000 square foot San Francisco space sits on the eighth floor of the former Macy’s Men’s department store and includes the largest rooftop dining space in downtown.

The Food

Nikkei classics anchor the menu. Robata-grilled black cod, wagyu steak, ceviche, sushi, and tiraditos. Cocktails lean Peruvian with pisco-based drinks alongside a sake list.

The Space

Rooftop with a heated outdoor terrace, indoor dining around a plant-lined bar, and a DJ lounge that turns dinner into nightlife as the evening progresses. Service runs into the early morning.
