Heart of the City Farmers Market is run as an independent nonprofit by the farmers themselves. It has operated at United Nations Plaza in Civic Center since 1981 and is one of the few farmer-run markets in California. The plaza becomes a market on Sundays and Wednesdays.
Hours
Sunday markets run 7am to 5pm, year-round (except Pride Sunday). Wednesday markets run 7am to 5:30pm, year-round (closed Christmas Day). Hours can shift slightly with the season; check the website before going.
What’s Sold
The vendor mix reflects Central Valley farming communities and the diverse residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Expect a wide range of produce, including Southeast Asian vegetables, Mexican chiles and herbs, citrus in winter, and stone fruit in summer. Prices are generally lower than at the marquee markets.
Payment and Benefits
Most vendors take cash. Some accept cards but not all. The market accepts EBT, and Market Match doubles CalFresh benefits up to $15 per visit.
Getting There
Civic Center BART and Muni Metro is at the edge of UN Plaza. Many Muni lines stop at the Civic Center area. Street parking is metered on Sundays as of recent SFMTA changes; check the signs.
