Swan Oyster Depot
What you need to know
Swan Oyster Depot has been on Polk Street since 1912, run by the same family for four generations. There are 18 stools at a marble counter. There are no tables. There is no menu printed in any meaningful sense, just a chalkboard above the counter. The line forms before they open and stays long all day.
The Food
Oysters from the half shell, Dungeness crab, smoked salmon, sashimi-grade tuna, clam chowder, and the legendary cioppino. The Sicilian Sashimi (raw Hawaiian Aweoweo with capers, olive oil, and bread) has been on the menu for decades.
Anthony Bourdain called it his favorite seafood spot in America. He said that on No Reservations.
The Space
Long, narrow, brightly lit. White tile, marble counter, ice display in the front window. Brothers from the Sancimino family have been working the counter for sixty-plus years. Photos of celebrity visitors cover the walls.
