The Food
Diner breakfast served all day: pancakes, omelets, French toast. Beyond that, burgers, patty melts, fish and chips and chicken fried steak. The house Hawaiian wedding cake, with pineapple and coconut, is the dessert people order.
The Story
Dennis Ziebell opened it in 1977 on the site of the old Five Corners Cafe and ran it with his husband and co-owner Bill Pung for nearly fifty years. It sold in July 2026 to a new owner who committed to keeping the staff, the menu, the decor and the hours as they were.
The room is about 1,374 square feet of red vinyl booths beside Harvey Milk Plaza, and it has been the Castro’s after hours canteen for most of its existence.
Practical Info
Price: $. Classic diner pricing.
Reservations: None. Walk in, and expect a wait between about 11pm and 2am at weekends when the bars empty out.
Hours: Open around the clock Thursday through Saturday. Tuesday and Wednesday overnight service was restored after the Castro Theatre reopened. Sunday and Monday it closes at 9.45pm. Ownership changed in July 2026, so call to confirm midweek nights.
