The Verdict

"A Mission District bar and restaurant with live music in the back room most nights. The bookings are eclectic, from jazz to country to experimental. No cover for most shows. The food is surprisingly good for a bar venue. Go on a weeknight for an unhurried evening."

What you need to know

Rite Spot Cafe is a small bar on Folsom Street at 17th in the Mission. It’s been operating for decades and hosts live music most nights of the week. The room is tiny: a bar along one side, a few tables, and a small stage area in the corner. Capacity is maybe 50 people.

What to Expect

The music ranges from jazz and blues to folk, country, and singer-songwriter sets. The performers are mostly local musicians playing for tips and a small audience that actually pays attention. The room is quiet enough that a solo acoustic act fills the space without amplification.

The bar serves beer, wine, and simple drinks. No food kitchen, though they’ve been known to serve small plates on occasion. The decor is old bar: wood, warm lighting, vintage signs. Nobody is here for the aesthetics. They’re here because the bartender knows their name.

Visiting

2099 Folsom Street, Mission District. Open most evenings. No cover charge. Tips for musicians are appreciated and expected. Drinks are reasonably priced for the neighborhood.

Getting There

16th Street Mission BART is a 10 minute walk north. The 33 Ashbury/18th bus stops nearby. Street parking on Folsom and the surrounding residential streets is usually available.

Skip this if you want a high energy night. This is a quiet neighborhood bar with live music. The appeal is the intimacy and the feeling of old San Francisco.
