Mission San Francisco de Asís, known as Mission Dolores, is the oldest intact building in San Francisco. The adobe chapel was completed in 1791, the sixth of the 21 California missions founded by the Spanish under Junípero Serra. Its thick adobe walls survived the 1906 earthquake that damaged the larger brick basilica next door, which was rebuilt.
The mission was built with the labor of Ohlone people, thousands of whom are buried in the cemetery, many in unmarked graves. The cemetery and a small museum are open to visitors, and the chapel ceiling carries a painted Ohlone design. There is a modest admission fee.
