The Fillmore Auditorium at Geary and Fillmore opened in 1912 and has been a dance hall, a Black music venue in the 1950s, and, from 1965, the rock hall that the promoter Bill Graham made famous. Graham staged the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, and many others here, helping define the San Francisco sound.
The upstairs hall still operates as a concert venue. By tradition, the staff hands out free apples at the door and gives away a custom poster after most shows. The walls of the stairwell are lined with original psychedelic posters from the Graham era.
