Tunnel Tops
The Verdict
"Best on a clear afternoon. Bring food or use the food trucks. Walk down to Crissy Field after for the full Presidio loop."
What you need to know
Tunnel Tops opened in July 2022 on top of the highway tunnels that carry traffic through the Presidio. Landscape architect Field Operations (the firm behind New York’s High Line) designed the 14-acre park to connect the Main Post of the Presidio to Crissy Field, and it immediately became one of the most popular public spaces in the city. Over 5 million people visited in the first three years.
What to expect
The views are the draw: the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay, and the Marin Headlands spread out from the park’s elevated position. Picnic areas, open lawns, a playground, and walking paths fill the space. Food trucks rotate through, and the Outpost Meadow (added in 2025) expanded the park with a 240-seat picnic area, BBQ grills, and umbrellas.
The park connects to trails leading down to Crissy Field and the waterfront, making it a natural starting point for a longer walk toward the bridge.
