Smuggler’s Cove
The Verdict
"Three floors of tiki and 700 rums. Order a proper Mai Tai (the real one, not the sweet one). Get there before 8pm to avoid the wait."
What you need to know
Smuggler’s Cove is a three-story tiki bar on Gough Street with over 700 rums on the wall. Owner Martin Cate published the definitive book on tiki cocktails. The space looks like a pirate ship interior. The menu is over 80 cocktails deep with traditional Caribbean rum drinks and tropical classics.
The Drinks
Mai Tais done correctly (the real ones, not the sweet ones), zombies, navy grog, planter’s punches. The rum club program is run for serious enthusiasts. Bartenders trained on every bottle in the back.
The Space
Three levels, dim lighting, water features, and tropical decor that crosses the line into pirate ship. Loud, hot, packed by 9pm most nights.
