Berkeley

Home to the University of California, the Gourmet Ghetto (birthplace of California cuisine at Chez Panisse), and Telegraph Avenue’s eclectic bookstores and street life. The UC Botanical Garden is one of the most diverse collections in the country. Fourth Street has boutique shopping. And the views from the Berkeley Hills look back across the bay at a postcard of San Francisco.

Local tip: No car needed — take BART to Downtown Berkeley. Walk up to the Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck Ave for lunch. Cheese Board Pizza Collective has a line for a reason. Tilden Regional Park above campus has fantastic hiking with bay views.

Oakland

Oakland’s food scene rivals San Francisco’s at half the price. Jack London Square is the waterfront anchor. Lake Merritt — a tidal lagoon surrounded by a necklace of parks — is the city’s living room. The Oakland Museum of California is underrated and excellent. Neighborhoods like Temescal and Rockridge serve up some of the best diverse dining in the Bay Area.

Local tip: Take BART to 19th Street Oakland for Uptown and Lake Merritt, or Rockridge for boutique shopping and restaurants. The Oakland First Friday street festival (first Friday of each month on Telegraph Ave) is incredible. Swan’s Market food hall is a hidden gem.

Mount Diablo

On clear days, the summit of Mount Diablo offers one of the most expansive views in North America — from the snow-capped Sierra Nevada to the Farallon Islands in the Pacific. The summit road is one of the best drives in the Bay Area. Serious hikers tackle the summit trail from the base; casual visitors can drive most of the way up and hike the last stretch.

🏔 Panoramic Views 🥾 Hiking 🚴 Cycling 🌅 Sunsets

Local tip: The summit road is a legendary cycling climb — you’ll share it with roadies on weekends. Visit on a clear winter day for the best chance of seeing the Sierra Nevada. There’s a small visitor center at the top with a viewing platform.
