Harvey Milk Plaza sits above the Castro Muni station at Castro and Market, marked by a giant rainbow flag that has flown here since 1997. The plaza is named for Harvey Milk, the camera-shop owner who in 1977 became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States as a San Francisco supervisor.
Milk was assassinated at City Hall on November 27, 1978, along with Mayor George Moscone, by former supervisor Dan White. A plaque marks his legacy. The flagpole and plaza are the symbolic front door of the Castro.
