All activities →Japanese Tea Garden
Oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, built for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. The Hagiwara family tended it from 1895 until they were forcibly removed during internment in 1942; Makoto Hagiwara is credited with introducing the American-style fortune cookie at the garden's tea house. Three acres in Golden Gate Park; free for SF residents with ID, and free for everyone Monday, Wednesday, and Friday before 10am.
Seward Street Slides
Two long concrete slides built into a steep hillside in 1973, designed by 14-year-old Kim Clark, who won a design competition organized by sculptor Ruth Asawa. The park opened after a decade of neighborhood resistance, including a 1966 sit-in. Grab cardboard from the pile at the bottom. Free, Tuesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm.
Cable Car Museum
Working powerhouse for SF's cable car system since 1887, with a mezzanine that looks down on the 14-foot sheaves continuously hauling every cable that runs under the city streets. Free, takes about 30 to 45 minutes, with the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines stopping outside.
