All activities →Wave Organ
Wave-activated sound sculpture built in May 1986 by Peter Richards (Exploratorium) and stone mason George Gonzales, with 25 PVC and concrete pipes set into rocks salvaged from the demolished Laurel Hill Cemetery. Free, open 24 hours, on a jetty next to the St. Francis Yacht Club. Loudest at high tide; check NOAA before you go.
Seward Street Slides
Two long concrete slides built into a steep hillside in 1973, designed by 14-year-old Kim Clark, who won a design competition organized by sculptor Ruth Asawa. The park opened after a decade of neighborhood resistance, including a 1966 sit-in. Grab cardboard from the pile at the bottom. Free, Tuesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm.
Balmy Alley
A one-block residential alley in the Mission covered in murals since 1972, with the modern tradition kicked off in 1985 when Ray Patlan organized 27 murals on indigenous Central American heritage and protest against US intervention. About 30 murals at any given time, between 24th and 25th Streets. Free, open 24 hours, easier to read in daylight.
