The Museum of the African Diaspora, known as MoAD, opened in 2005 at the base of the St. Regis tower on Mission Street. It is one of the few museums in the country focused entirely on the art, history, and culture of the African diaspora, the global spread of people of African descent.
The museum has no permanent collection and instead runs rotating exhibitions of contemporary artists alongside historical material. A three-story photo mosaic of a child’s face, assembled from thousands of small images, fills the glass corner facing Mission Street and is visible from the sidewalk. There is an admission fee, with some free days.
