The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts opened in 1993 as part of the same redevelopment, a multidisciplinary arts center with galleries and a theater. The gallery building was designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki and the theater by James Stewart Polshek. It programs contemporary visual art, dance, film, and performance, with a focus on artists of color and local communities.
It sits on the Mission Street edge of Yerba Buena Gardens, across from the museums. Exhibitions change regularly and admission is low-cost, with free days. It is one of the anchors of the SoMa arts district.
