SF Camerawork Will Reopen September 9, Weeks After Announcing Its Closure

SF Camerawork, the nonprofit photography gallery at Fort Mason Center, will reopen September 9, 2026, three weeks after it closed following 52 years in operation. A members’ exhibition runs September 16 through October 4, with an opening reception September 17.

What happened

SF Camerawork closed its doors August 16, 2026, citing rising costs and falling public funding, as SFGuide reported at the time. The nonprofit had operated at 2 Marina Boulevard, Building A, inside the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, for 52 years.

The reversal

The reopening came together in about three weeks. It was led by Hal Fischer, one of SF Camerawork’s three original founders, and Monique Deschaines, director of Euqinom Gallery and a former SF Camerawork board member, according to Mission Local. Fischer sent the board a proposal offering to secure funding for three months and give board members who did not want to continue an exit option. Fischer is now board president. Deschaines is interim executive director.

SF Camerawork’s own site confirms the reopening. A statement posted at sfcamerawork.org says the organization “will continue” and that a new chapter is beginning with the “same SFC spirit.”
