The Legion of Honor Will Show 80 Azzedine Alaïa Garments Starting November 21

The Legion of Honor will open Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion on November 21, 2026. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco call it the first major United States retrospective of the Tunisian-born, Paris-based couturier, and it runs through April 11, 2027.

What is in the show

FAMSF announced the exhibition in a press release dated July 23, 2026. It brings together 80 garments from across Alaïa’s career as a designer, shown alongside pieces from the historical fashion collection he assembled over decades and drew on for technical reference. FAMSF says those historical pieces are being presented in the US for the first time, and that they include work by Cristóbal Balenciaga, Madame Grès, Charles James, and Gilbert Adrian.

Designs Alaïa made for Tina Turner, Grace Jones, and Rihanna are in the exhibition. Hoodline, citing the San Francisco Chronicle, reports that one of them is the silk organza dress beaded with gold-tone steel that Turner wore for a 1989 Peter Lindbergh photo shoot in Paris.

Who organized it

The curators are Laura Camerlengo, curator in charge of costume and textile arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and Olivier Saillard, director of the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris. Alaïa was born in 1940 and died in 2017.

Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of FAMSF, tied the work to Alaïa’s training: the designer reshaped fashion history “with technical rigor and an understanding of form rooted in his education as a sculptor and his study of historical design.” That framing is part of why the retrospective landed at an art museum rather than a fashion museum.

What this means if you are planning a visit

The exhibition opens two weeks before the Thanksgiving travel week and runs into spring, so it overlaps most of the winter visitor season. The Legion of Honor sits in Lincoln Park at 100 34th Avenue, at the northwest corner of the city, which is a longer trip from downtown than the de Young in Golden Gate Park. Two other shows are on at the Legion of Honor into 2027. Eternal Paris: Photographing the City of Light opened September 5, 2026 and runs to April 4, 2027, and the Joan Miró artist book show Proof Against All runs to July 25, 2027. Both are included with general admission.
