Tunnel Records
What you need to know
The westernmost record store on the planet
Tunnel Records claims to be the westernmost record store on Earth, and given that the Taraval Street location is two blocks from Ocean Beach, nobody has challenged it yet. Founded in 2017, the shop is small and curated, with a focus on jazz, soul, and rock vinyl alongside a healthy willingness to stock whatever else catches the owner’s ear.
Two locations
The original shop is at 3614A Taraval Street in the Parkside neighborhood, open daily with weekday hours of noon to 6pm and weekend hours starting at 11am. The second location is inside the 4-Star Theatre at 2200 Clement Street in the Richmond, open during evening showings and weekend afternoons. The 4-Star location ties records to movies: you can flip through vinyl before or after a film.
What you’ll find
The selection is curated rather than massive. Jazz and soul are the strongest sections, with rock filling in the gaps. The shop also sells merchandise (shirts, sweatshirts, hats, prints) and hosts occasional live events. Dogs are welcome. The vibe is neighborhood shop rather than serious collector destination, which is exactly what the Parkside and Richmond needed.
Getting there
The Taraval location is served by the L-Taraval Muni line, which runs right along Taraval Street. The Clement Street location is accessible via the 38 Geary bus (transfer at Park Presidio to get to Clement). Both neighborhoods have relatively easy street parking compared to the rest of the city.
