What to expect
The store occupies 24,000 square feet in a former bowling alley (Park Bowl), with the original “Bowling” marquee still on the roof. It opened on Haight in 1997. Inventory is organized by genre and format: vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and cassettes. Jazz, soul, international folk, classical, rock, and electronic each have their own section. New releases share space with rare and out-of-print recordings.
The buy-sell-trade counter takes records and CDs for cash or store credit.
Visiting
Open daily 11am to 7pm. Free to browse, with prices varying by format and rarity.
Getting there
At the corner of Haight and Stanyan, at the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park. The N-Judah stops at Carl and Cole, about a 10-minute walk south. The 6-Haight/Parnassus and 7-Haight/Noriega buses run along Haight Street and stop nearby. Street parking on side streets is competitive.
