What you need to know
Opening Day on the Bay is one of San Francisco’s most cherished spring traditions, dating back to 1917 when the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association first organized this colorful celebration. The parade of decorated boats runs just north of Anita Rock off the shore of Crissy Field in the Presidio, then follows along the city front toward Fort Mason. The beloved “Blessing of the Pleasure Craft” tradition was added in 1963, modeled after the time honored blessings of working fishing vessels. Any boat can participate—you don’t need to be a yacht club member. It’s a perfect day to get out on the water or watch from shore as the Bay comes alive with color and celebration.
