Vesuvio opened in 1948 and became a gathering place for the Beat writers and the bohemian crowd that followed them. Jack Kerouac, Dylan Thomas, Neal Cassady, and Allen Ginsberg all drank here. The story that Kerouac once spent a night at Vesuvio instead of going to meet Henry Miller as planned is part of the bar’s lore.
The interior is covered in collage, old photographs, and memorabilia across two floors, with a balcony over the front windows. It sits directly across Jack Kerouac Alley from City Lights. Vesuvio opens early and runs late.
