El Farolito
The Verdict
"Carne asada super burrito, mix both salsas. The line looks long but moves fast. Have your order ready before you reach the counter."
What you need to know
El Farolito opened in December 1983 at 2779 Mission Street. It is the Mission’s late-night burrito spot. When the bars close, this is where San Francisco goes. Fluorescent lights, long lines, carne asada grilling on an open flame while you wait.
What to Order
Super Burrito (Carne Asada): Grilled beef chopped fresh off the flame, rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa. Flour tortilla the size of your forearm. Close to two pounds, under $12.
Super Quesadilla: Underrated. Tortilla grilled crispy, your meat of choice, fresh ingredients.
Tacos: Soft corn tortillas, two or three at a time. Al pastor with pineapple off the spit is the call.
Mix the salsas. Red is bright and tangy, green has serious heat.
The Experience
No ambiance. Order at the counter, find a seat at the communal tables if there is one, eat surrounded by Mission night owls. Cab drivers, service workers, post-bar crowds. After midnight on weekends it is loud and packed. The line moves faster than it looks. Know your order before you reach the front.
