Yank Sing Closes Its Rincon Center Dim Sum Room September 20

Yank Sing serves its last dim sum at the Rincon Center on Sunday, September 20. The restaurant at 101 Spear Street is closing because its lease has run out, co-owner Vera Chan Waller told The San Francisco Standard. The company’s other San Francisco dim sum room, at 49 Stevenson Street, stays open.

This is the detail worth getting right, because the headlines have caused some confusion: only one of the two locations is closing. If you have a reservation or a standing habit at Stevenson Street, nothing changes there.

What Is Actually Closing

The Rincon Center room is the larger of the two, a high-ceilinged dining room inside the Rincon Center complex at Spear and Mission. Chan Waller told the Standard that the lease reached its end, and that service continues at the Stevenson Street location “just five blocks away.” SFist and the San Francisco Chronicle reported the same closing date.

Yank Sing holds a James Beard Foundation America’s Classics award and a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation. It runs traditional cart service, and the Standard reports that more than 100 dishes are typically available on a given day, including xiaolongbao, shrimp har gow, pork potstickers and deep-fried crab claw.

Where to Go Instead

The Stevenson Street room is at 49 Stevenson Street, off Market between First and Second. From Rincon Center that is about a ten minute walk northwest, or two stops on any Market Street Muni Metro line to Montgomery station.

Cart service means the range on offer shifts through the day. Lunch is when the carts run hardest at both Yank Sing rooms, and the Stevenson Street location has historically taken reservations.

Getting There

Rincon Center: 101 Spear Street. Embarcadero station serves BART and all Muni Metro lines, two blocks north. The 2, 14 and 21 run along Mission Street.

Stevenson Street: 49 Stevenson Street. Montgomery station, half a block away, serves BART and Muni Metro.

Neither address has dedicated parking. The garages under Rincon Center and at Ecker Place are the closest paid options, and both charge downtown evening rates.
