Golden Gate Bridge Weeknight Lane Closures Begin for Final Seismic Retrofit Phase

Overnight lane closures on the Golden Gate Bridge began Monday, October 5, 2026, as the final phase of the bridge’s seismic retrofit moves into construction. The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District says the closures run Monday through Friday nights from about 9pm to 5am, and that at least one lane stays open in each direction the whole time.

The Schedule

According to the district’s October 2 announcement, crews close lanes on weeknights between roughly 9pm and 5am. On Tuesday through Friday mornings, all six lanes reopen by 5am. When work runs on a Friday night, all lanes reopen by 7am Saturday. There are no closures on holidays.

The district posts the exact plan one week at a time. For the week of October 5, its lane closure notice lists one southbound lane and two northbound lanes open from 9pm to 5am Monday through Thursday nights, with no closures needed Friday, October 9. The district says the roadway itself stays open to all vehicle traffic at all times, and drivers should expect slower speeds and minor delays in the work zones.

The closures exist so crews can lower temporary access platforms and construction materials onto the bridge for work on the towers and the suspension span. There is no published end date for the weeknight closures.

What the Retrofit Involves

This is the last phase of a seismic program the district has been working through in stages. In October 2025 the district’s board approved an $863.9 million construction contract with Halmar International, LLC of New York, according to the Building and Operating Committee staff report. That first contract covers the suspension bridge’s two main towers and two side spans: retrofitting the tower legs, strengthening cable supports, replacing deck joints, installing energy dissipation devices, painting structural steel and abating lead paint.

The staff report puts the budget for that contract, including a $41.35 million contingency, at about $1.01 billion. It lists three funding sources: $395.7 million from the federal Bridge Investment Program, $200 million in Caltrans Highway Bridge Program funds, and $416 million from district reserves. Trade coverage of the award, including Equipment World, describes construction running into the mid-2030s.

Walking and Biking the Bridge

The staff report says the project will maintain pedestrian and bicycle access on the bridge sidewalks and on the surrounding roads and trails while the work goes on. The lane closures are on the roadway and run overnight. Our Golden Gate Bridge guide covers where to start a walk and how to get there without a car, and Marshall’s Beach is a footpath-only beach below the Presidio bluffs with the bridge directly overhead.

If You Drive the Bridge at Night

Weeknight trips between San Francisco and Marin after 9pm pass through the work zones. Check the district’s weekly lane closure schedule before you go; it changes from week to week, and some weeks have no Friday closures at all. The district says it posts traffic alerts on goldengate.org during all lane closures.
