Nordstrom Rack Will Open at 2 Stockton St. Near Union Square in Fall 2027
Nordstrom Rack is coming back to downtown San Francisco. Nordstrom said on Thursday, October 15, 2026, that it will open a Nordstrom Rack at 2 Stockton St., the four-story building at the corner of Market and Stockton streets, in fall 2027. Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the store on Instagram with the line “Nordstrom Rack is coming to 2 Stockton Street. 50,000 square feet. Fall 2027,” ABC7 reported.
It will be the company’s first full store in the city since 2023, when Nordstrom closed both its San Francisco Centre department store and the Nordstrom Rack on Market Street.
The Building at 2 Stockton St.
2 Stockton St. sits where Stockton, Market, Ellis and Fourth streets meet, one block east of the Powell Street cable car turnaround and above the Powell Street BART and Muni station. Forever 21 occupied the building until 2019, and the candy shop IT’SUGAR briefly took the space after that before it went vacant again, according to SFist.
SFist puts the store at 51,500 square feet; the mayor’s announcement rounded it to 50,000. SFist also reported that a permit has been issued for a three-story office addition on top of the building and new facades on its Market and Stockton sides, a project the San Francisco Chronicle valued at $60 million. Nordstrom has not given a more specific opening date than fall 2027.
What Nordstrom and the Mayor Said
“The city has many wonderful assets, and it has clearly built momentum in making downtown a great place for customers,” Nordstrom co-CEO Erik Nordstrom said in a statement quoted by The San Francisco Standard. Lurie said in a statement, “Three years ago, companies were leaving San Francisco. Today, they want to be here,” and called the store “another sign of the growing confidence in San Francisco.”
Where Nordstrom Used to Be
The Nordstrom department store anchored the San Francisco Centre mall on Market Street until 2023. The mall has since closed, and a planned sale fell through earlier this year. The former Nordstrom Rack at 901 Market St. is now a Ross Dress for Less, and a developer filed plans this year to convert that building to housing, The Standard reported. The company also runs a Nordstrom Local on Fillmore Street, which handles online order pickups, returns, tailoring and styling appointments but does not stock regular store inventory.
Other Retail Returning to the Same Corner
The Nordstrom Rack site is across Market Street from the Uniqlo flagship at 801 Market St., which reopened on October 9. The Standard and SFist list other recent downtown retail moves: The RealReal and AT&T have returned to Union Square locations they left during the pandemic, and Zara plans a larger store at 400 Post St., expected in early 2027. Powell Street, one block west, is also due for a $40 million rebuild.
Getting There
2 Stockton St. is a few steps from the Powell Street BART and Muni Metro station, the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable car turnaround at Powell and Market, and the Union Square/Market Street Central Subway station on Stockton Street.
