Best Comedy Clubs in San Francisco

The hungry i launched a good chunk of American stand-up and Robin Williams worked out material in a Richmond District room the size of a living room, so the bar for a comedy club in this city is set high by ghosts. Five clubs, ranked, all of them still running.

Check which night you are booking. The Friday and Saturday headliner shows are a different room from the midweek showcases, and the showcases are usually the better value.

  1. Cobb’s Comedy Club 1

    Cobb’s Comedy Club

Cobb's Comedy Club has booked stand-up in San Francisco since 1982. The 400-seat room on Columbus Avenue in North Beach runs touring headliners with a full dinner menu and bar.

Shows are ticketed and seating is by arrival order within your tier, so get there when doors open if you want to be near the stage. The box office is dark Monday and Tuesday unless something is booked. Take the 30 or 45 rather than driving; North Beach parking on a show night is a project.

  2. Punch Line Comedy Club 2

    Punch Line Comedy Club

The Punch Line sits on the edge of the Financial District where Battery Street gets a little looser, and the room has that classic comedy club feel with red brick walls and a stage that seems to float above the crowd.

    Cheaper Than Therapy Comedy

This spot on Sutter Street delivers exactly what the name promises: comedy that cuts through pretense and leaves you gasping for air between laughs.
