Financial District
About Financial District
Het Financial District is gebouwd op de begraven rand van de baai. In de Gold Rush-jaren was dit Yerba Buena Cove, en Montgomery Street liep langs de oorspronkelijke waterkant. Schepen die in 1849 en 1850 aankwamen, werden achtergelaten door bemanningen die naar de goudvelden vertrokken, en de stad vulde de baai op met zand en puin rondom hen. De resten van tientallen van die schepen liggen nog steeds onder de straten.
Toen de waterkant oostwaarts opschoof naar het nieuwe land, werd het district het bankcentrum van de westkust. A.P. Giannini richtte in 1904 de Bank of Italy op. Na de aardbeving en brand van 1906 verstrekte hij leningen vanaf een geïmproviseerd bureau op de wharf om mensen te helpen bij de wederopbouw, en de bank groeide later uit tot Bank of America. Het Bank of Italy-gebouw staat nog steeds op 552 Montgomery Street.
Het district werd na 1906 herbouwd en bleef in de hoogte groeien. De Transamerica Pyramid op 600 Montgomery Street werd voltooid in 1972 en was het hoogste gebouw van de stad totdat Salesforce Tower het in 2018 voorbijstreefde. Een halve hectare groot sequoiabos, Transamerica Redwood Park, ligt aan de voet ervan en is open voor het publiek.
