About Financial District
El Financial District está construido sobre el borde enterrado de la bahía. Durante los años de la Fiebre del Oro, esto era Yerba Buena Cove, y Montgomery Street corría a lo largo de la costa original. Los barcos que llegaron en 1849 y 1850 fueron abandonados por las tripulaciones que se marcharon a los campos de oro, y la ciudad rellenó la ensenada con arena y escombros alrededor de ellos. Los restos de docenas de esos barcos todavía están bajo las calles.
A medida que la costa se desplazó hacia el este sobre el terreno nuevo, el distrito se convirtió en el centro bancario de la Costa Oeste. A.P. Giannini fundó el Bank of Italy en 1904. Después del terremoto e incendio de 1906, otorgó préstamos desde un escritorio improvisado en el muelle para ayudar a la gente a reconstruir, y el banco luego se convirtió en Bank of America. El edificio del Bank of Italy todavía se encuentra en 552 Montgomery Street.
El distrito fue reconstruido después de 1906 y siguió creciendo hacia arriba. El Transamerica Pyramid en 600 Montgomery Street se completó en 1972 y fue el edificio más alto de la ciudad hasta que Salesforce Tower lo superó en 2018. Una arboleda de secuoyas de media hectárea, Transamerica Redwood Park, se encuentra en su base y está abierta al público.
