The city’s Hall of Justice stood on this corner from 1912 until it was torn down in 1968. Its fan-shaped fourth-floor windows were a fixture of police dramas, from The Lineup in the 1950s to Raymond Burr’s Ironside in the 1960s, and the permit record adds The Lady from Shanghai (1947) and Woman on the Run (1950).
The hotel that replaced it, now the Hilton San Francisco Financial District, was brand new when Dirty Harry (1971) was shot. The film opens with a sniper on the Bank of America tower at 555 California Street taking aim at a woman swimming in this hotel’s rooftop pool.
