Southbound US-101 Closes Through the Hospital Curve November 6 to 9 as Caltrans Finishes Repaving

Caltrans will close every southbound lane of U.S. 101 through San Francisco’s Hospital Curve from 11pm on Friday, November 6, to 6am on Monday, November 9, 2026. The closure runs between 17th Street and Cesar Chavez Street, and Caltrans says this is the weekend that finishes the repaving job. Northbound 101 stays open the whole time.

What Closes

According to the Caltrans District 4 announcement published October 27, all southbound lanes of the Bayshore Freeway between 17th Street and Cesar Chavez are closed for the full weekend. Four on-ramps are also closed while the work is underway:

  • 4th Street on-ramp
  • 7th Street on-ramp
  • 10th Street on-ramp
  • The westbound I-80 to northbound 101 Central Freeway connector

Caltrans is telling drivers to avoid southbound 101 through the area that weekend and to use southbound I-280 instead.

Why This Weekend Matters

Repaving of the Hospital Curve, the bend of 101 that passes Zuckerberg San Francisco General, started on the northbound lanes in September. Two southbound lanes were done in October. Caltrans says the November 6 to 9 closure covers the last two southbound lanes and completes the project, which is part of a larger 101 rehabilitation that began in fall 2025. Caltrans says the finished work gives the corridor a 40-year life span.

This is the date that replaced the southbound closure originally planned for October 2 to 5, which we covered with the earlier Hospital Curve closures. It also follows the westbound I-80 closure through SoMa on October 23 to 26.

Getting to SFO and the Peninsula That Weekend

Southbound 101 is the usual drive from downtown and SoMa to SFO, so plan around it if you have a flight between late Friday night and early Monday morning. Southbound I-280 is the Caltrans alternate. BART runs from the Market Street stations directly to SFO, and Caltrain runs from 4th and King toward the Peninsula, with a BART connection to the airport at Millbrae. Neither uses the closed stretch.

Caltrans posts real-time conditions on QuickMap and schedule updates at sfhighwayprojects.com.
