About North Beach

North Beach的名字来自一片如今已不存在的海滩。19世纪50年代，海湾一直延伸到Taylor街和Francisco街附近，Telegraph Hill和Russian Hill之间有一处海湾。此后数十年间，城市将其填埋，但即便海水如今已远在数个街区之外，这个名字还是保留了下来。

意大利移民自19世纪70年代起在此定居，许多人来自Genoa、利古里亚海岸，后来还有西西里人。到20世纪20年代，这一带已以意大利裔为主，被称为Little Italy，街道上有意大利语报纸和商铺。其中一些商铺至今仍在营业，包括自1911年起就在Washington Square制作focaccia的Liguria Bakery。

20世纪50年代，North Beach成为垮掉派运动的中心。Lawrence Ferlinghetti和Peter D. Martin于1953年开设了City Lights书店，City Lights Publishers于1956年出版了Allen Ginsberg的《Howl》。垮掉派常去的酒吧和咖啡馆，包括City Lights旁边的Vesuvio和几个街区外的Caffè Trieste，至今仍在营业。
