Fort Mason was a coastal defense site and later the main army port for the Pacific. During World War II, more than a million and a half soldiers shipped out to the Pacific theater through its piers. The army left in the 1960s, and the post became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The lower piers now house the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, with galleries, theaters, and the long-running vegetarian restaurant Greens. The upper green is a grassy bluff with a view of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Great Meadow above hosts festivals.
