The Wave Organ

The Wave Organ sits at the end of the jetty that encloses the Marina small craft harbor. It is a sound sculpture built in 1986 by the Exploratorium, made from carved granite and marble salvaged from a demolished cemetery. Twenty-five pipes run down into the bay at different levels.

As waves move in and out, water pushes air through the pipes and produces low gurgles, hisses, and hums. The sound is subtle and works best at high tide. The walk out the jetty gives a clear view back at the city, the bridge, and the Palace of Fine Arts dome.
