MoAD Is Closed Until September 30, When Black Art Week Returns

The Museum of the African Diaspora is closed to the public through September 29, 2026, and reopens on September 30. MoAD says on its own site that the shutdown is for installation of its Fall 2026/27 exhibitions. If you are downtown before the end of September and had the museum on your list, move it to a later date.

What reopens on September 30

The reopening is timed to Nexus: SF/Bay Area Black Art Week, which MoAD hosts from September 30 to October 4, 2026. This is the third year for Nexus, which brings museums, galleries and independent artists into a shared program devoted to Black visual art. The San Francisco Chronicle previewed this year’s edition on August 19.

Two dated items are already on the museum’s calendar. Dorian Reid’s “Calling All Cats!”, part of MoAD’s Emerging Artist Program, runs September 30 to December 6, 2026. The Afropolitan Ball, the museum’s annual gala, is on October 3, 2026, from 6 to 11:30 pm.

Where MoAD is and what it costs

MoAD is at 685 Mission Street at 3rd, on the ground floor of the St. Regis, across from Yerba Buena Gardens and a block from SFMOMA. Admission is free on the second Saturday of every month through the Thrive @ MoAD program, which is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente. Check the museum’s visit page for current hours and ticket prices once it reopens.

Context

This is a planned installation closure, and MoAD has scheduled its reopening date in advance. The museum also closed for a longer stretch in 2025 to renovate its interior and galleries, reopened that October, and marked its 20th anniversary at the same time.

What else is open nearby
