SFMOMA Opens New Work: Raven Chacon, a Five-Channel Film Installation, on October 24

SFMOMA opens New Work: Raven Chacon on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The exhibition runs through November 7, 2027 on Floor 6, according to the museum’s upcoming exhibitions page. Member previews are October 23 and 24.

What’s in the Show

Chacon is a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and artist whose work connects Diné worldviews with Western classical, avant-garde and noise music traditions, per SFMOMA’s 2026-27 exhibitions announcement. For this commission he debuts a five-channel silent film with drawings and an ambient soundtrack of spaghetti western instrumentals and drone noises.

The film pairs Ray Bradbury’s 1950 book The Martian Chronicles with footage from the Prelinger Archives film collection to depict travelers visiting Southwest tribal lands. SFMOMA says the work, presented in the year of the U.S. semiquincentennial, considers the Doctrine of Discovery as an ongoing principle behind the expansion of territory, “both terrestrial and beyond.”
