October is one of the warmest and clearest months of the year in San Francisco, and it is the busiest month on the city’s outdoor calendar. The first weekend alone has Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park, the Castro Street Fair and the start of Fleet Week. The second brings the Blue Angels and the Italian Heritage Parade, and the month closes with Halloween and the first Día de los Muertos exhibitions.
Here is what is happening in San Francisco in October 2026, with the dates and costs we have been able to verify from first-party sources.
Festivals and Free Street Events
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, October 2 to 4. The free festival fills Hellman Hollow, Lindley Meadow and Marx Meadow in Golden Gate Park with 71 sets across six stages, and music runs until 7pm each day. Robert Plant has been added to the lineup.
African Arts Festival, Saturday, October 3. The sixth edition takes over the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens from 11am to 4pm with live music and dance, drum and dance lessons, and food and craft vendors. Free. See our festival preview.
Castro Street Fair, Sunday, October 4. The 52nd fair runs around Castro and Market Streets, with a $10 to $20 suggested donation at the gates. Our Castro Street Fair guide has the stages and street closures.
Fleet Week, October 4 to 12. Ship tours, the Parade of Ships and the air show, which runs October 9 to 11 and is headed by the Blue Angels. Our Fleet Week guide has the performer lineup and where to watch from.
CRANE, October 9, 10, 16 and 17. A 40-minute light, music and projection piece on the Hunters Point Shipyard gantry crane, with watch parties in the Bayview and a free livestream. Italian Heritage Parade, Sunday, October 11. The parade leaves Jefferson and Powell Streets at 12:30pm and runs down Columbus Avenue to Washington Square. Free. See our parade guide.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Monday, October 12. The day starts before dawn with the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Sunrise Gathering on Alcatraz, with boats leaving Pier 33 from 5am for $12. In the afternoon, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival holds a free Indigenous Peoples Day program with the singer Jeremy Dutcher from noon to 4pm on the Great Lawn. Potrero Hill Festival, Saturday, October 17. The 51st neighborhood festival runs 10am to 5pm across four blocks of 20th Street, with R&B, food and family activities, and benefits the neighborhood’s public schools. See our festival preview. A few blocks north, Jackson Playground has a $10 million state grant toward its $48 million rebuild, with construction planned for late 2027.
Bay Area Science Festival, Saturday, October 17. More than 100 hands-on demonstrations at UCSF Mission Bay, 11am to 4pm, free and rain or shine. See our festival guide.
Sunday Streets, Sunday, October 18. The last open-streets day of the 2026 season is in the Excelsior. Our Sunday Streets post covers what is known about the route.
Leap Sandcastle Classic, Saturday, October 24. Teams build sand sculptures at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street from 11am to 2:30pm, with awards at 3:15pm. Free to watch. See our Sandcastle Classic preview.
World of Dumplings, Sunday, October 25. The third edition of this free food festival at the Ferry Building runs 11am to 5pm, with dumpling vendors, eating contests and cooking demonstrations. See our World of Dumplings preview.
Halloween and Día de los Muertos
Terror Vault, from October 1. SLASHED: Return to Hellville runs selected nights to November 1 inside the Old Mint at 88 Fifth Street; it is 18 and over. See our Terror Vault guide.
Clancy’s Pumpkin Patch, October 2 to 31. Open 9am to 9pm daily at 7th Avenue and Lawton Street in the Inner Sunset, the only location this year.
Thrill-O-Ween, Saturday, October 24. A free Halloween afternoon at Thrive City outside Chase Center, noon to 5pm, with a costume contest and trick-or-treat stations. Our Thrill-O-Ween post has the details. The same night, the California Academy of Sciences holds its SuperNatural Halloween party.
In Their Name: Día de Los Muertos, from October 24. SOMArts’ 27th annual Day of the Dead exhibition opens with a reception on October 23 and runs to November 20 at 934 Brannan Street. Entry during gallery hours is free. See our exhibition preview.
Nightmare on Front Street, Friday, October 30. The Downtown SF Partnership’s free Halloween block party runs 2pm to 10pm in the Front Street Entertainment Zone. Details are on the Downtown SF Partnership’s event page.
Halloween Hoopla, Saturday, October 31. Yerba Buena Gardens Festival’s free Halloween program for young children runs noon to 3pm.
Music and Performing Arts
San Francisco Symphony. Renée Fleming sings Strauss’s Four Last Songs with Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducting on October 1 at 2pm, October 3 at 7:30pm and October 4 at 2pm. Later in the month at Davies Symphony Hall: Karina Canellakis conducts Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances October 9 to 11, Ludovico Einaudi plays solo piano on October 12, Lisa Batiashvili, Gautier Capuçon and Jean-Yves Thibaudet play piano trios on October 15, Joe Hisaishi conducts his own music October 22 to 24, and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal visits on October 25.
San Francisco Opera. Mary, Queen of Scots finishes its run on October 4. Massenet’s Manon runs October 15 to November 1, conducted by Eun Sun Kim with Amina Edris and Pene Pati, and The Marriage of Figaro opens on October 31. Tickets start at $30.
Litquake, October 8 to 24. The literary festival runs at venues across the city and closes with Lit Crawl on October 24. Our Litquake guide has the schedule.
Free concerts at Yerba Buena Gardens. The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival’s free season runs through October, including lunchtime concerts on October 8 and 15 and an afternoon set by Joe Bataan on October 17 at 2pm.
Warfield Commons, the building above the Warfield at 988 Market Street, opened on September 27 with KALW’s new studios and 10 other arts and media tenants. See our report on the building.
Mid-Market theater district pilot. Three donors put $500,000 into a 12-month pilot for lighting, public art and arts tenants on the 900 block of Market Street, and the first Market Street Arts and Theater Festival runs Saturday, October 17, from 4 to 10pm. See our report on the pilot.
Museums: What Opens and What Closes
Opening: RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me opens October 3 with a surcharge over general admission and runs to February 7, 2027. Vishnu’s Cosmic Ocean, built around a nearly 20-foot 11th-century bronze Vishnu from Angkor, opens at the Asian Art Museum on October 23, runs to January 25, 2027 and is included with general admission. Awaking Beauty: The Art of Eyvind Earle opens at the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio on October 23. SFMOMA opens New Work: Raven Chacon on Floor 6 on October 24. Syd Mead: Future Pastime, 16 gouache paintings by the Blade Runner and TRON designer, opens October 8 at the Transamerica Pyramid Annex Gallery and runs to December 17.
Reopened: The Museum of the African Diaspora reopened on September 30 with Dewey Crumpler: Sonic Lineages across all three floors, and Nexus: SF/Bay Area Black Art Week runs to October 4 at venues around the Bay.
Closing: Forever Grateful, Golden Gate Park, with Ken Kesey’s original Furthur bus, closes at the County Fair Building on October 25.
Still running: Treasures of the Pharaohs at the de Young through January 31, 2027, ticketed separately. Eternal Paris at the Legion of Honor, included with general admission. Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective at the Asian Art Museum to January 25, 2027.
Sport
Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA Finals. The Valkyries swept the Las Vegas Aces 3-0 in the semifinals and face the Atlanta Dream in their first WNBA Finals. Chase Center hosts Game 1 on Saturday, October 17 at 12:30pm and Game 2 on Monday, October 19 at 5pm, plus Game 5 (October 26) and Game 7 (October 31) if needed, with watch parties at the arena for the games in Atlanta. Golden State Warriors preseason. The Warriors host the Lakers on October 6, the Kings on October 10 and the Trail Blazers on October 16 at Chase Center. See our preseason guide.
Food, Drink and Shopping
Uniqlo opens a flagship at 801 Market Street on October 9, with a repair studio. See our report on the store.

Bruma, a cocktail lounge in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton on Nob Hill, opens October 12. See our report on the opening.
Che Fico reopens at 838 Divisadero Street on Sunday, October 18, four months after a June fire. Reservations are open. See our report on the reopening.
The Portal, a 45-seat nonprofit arthouse at 3293 Mission Street, says it opens this month, though it has not published a date.
Free Things to Do
The de Young, the Legion of Honor and the Conservatory of Flowers are free on Tuesday, October 6, and the Asian Art Museum is free on Sunday, October 4. Our free museum days guide for October has the full list, including resident Saturdays and library passes.
Beyond the museums, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, the Italian Heritage Parade, the Potrero Hill Festival, the Bay Area Science Festival, Sunday Streets, the Sandcastle Classic, World of Dumplings, Thrill-O-Ween and Nightmare on Front Street are all free. So is the farewell event for Marco Cochrane’s R-Evolution at Embarcadero Plaza on October 2, from 2pm to 8pm, before the sculpture comes down starting October 12.
Getting Around: Closures and Changes
US-101 Hospital Curve closes southbound from 11pm on Friday, October 16 to 6am on Monday, October 19, with one northbound lane also closed. The closure Caltrans had planned for October 2 to 5 has moved to November 6 to 9, but the southbound Central Freeway connector to US-101 is still closed from 11pm on October 2 to 6am on October 5. Caltrain’s first rider code of conduct takes effect October 19, after an education period starting October 5. See our explainer.
Muni’s next 112 buses have USB charging ports, and the first enter service in October. Muni headsigns keep flashing “Fare Required” through late November; our explainer on the signs covers how to pay.
Construction on the Powell Street rebuild between Market and Geary is set to start this fall, in the blocks around the cable car turnaround. Our Powell Street update covers the schedule and what it means for cable car riders.
Alcatraz Island closes to visitors from October 26 while crews replace two ferry dock pilings, and repairs are expected to be finished by November 18. See our Alcatraz closure report.
Golden Gate Bridge weeknight lane closures began October 5 for the final phase of the seismic retrofit, about 9pm to 5am, with at least one lane open in each direction. See our lane closure report.
PG&E must file its own valuation of its San Francisco grid by October 20. Our public power explainer covers what the city is proposing. Separately, on October 8 the city asked state regulators to publicly investigate 40 large PG&E outages since the December blackout.
Fleet Week weekend, October 9 to 11, brings road closures and heavy crowds along the northern waterfront. Muni and walking are the practical ways to reach the Marina Green and Fort Mason those days.
Highway 37 closure, October 23 to 26. Caltrans closes State Route 37 in both directions between Mare Island in Vallejo and Sears Point from 10pm Friday, October 23, to 5am Monday, October 26, with nightly westbound closures on October 21 and 22. Detours run through Napa and Sonoma on SR-121, SR-12 and SR-29. See our closure details.
Looking Ahead to November
Tickets for the new Fisherman’s Wharf ice rink go on sale October 1; the rink opens November 4. The Legion of Honor opens Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion on November 21. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. On the Wharf, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! at 175 Jefferson Street will close by the end of the year; no last day has been announced. In the Mission, the renovated Mission Branch Library reopens on Saturday, November 14; its temporary Valencia Street branch closes October 31. The first king tides of the season are predicted for November 24 to 26, with the peak predicted tide on December 24; see our king tide dates and heights.
Planning Notes
The first two weekends carry most of the month’s load. October 2 to 4 has Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, the Castro Street Fair, the start of Fleet Week and Nexus Black Art Week, and October 9 to 11 has the Fleet Week air show and the Italian Heritage Parade. Hotel rates and restaurant bookings tighten on those dates. The warm weather is not uniform across the city: the Sunset and the Richmond stay cooler than the Mission and the eastern neighborhoods on the same afternoon, so dress for the neighborhood you will be in. New at the zoo: two young capybaras from the Sacramento Zoo are due to go on view at the San Francisco Zoo, tentatively from Tuesday, October 13. Details, prices and transit are in our capybara report.
