Archimedes Banya

The Verdict

"Go for the weekday happy hour (noon to 4pm) for the best deal. The Russian sauna is significantly hotter than what you're used to. Eat the karcho soup after."

What you need to know

Archimedes Banya brings Russian bathhouse culture to San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. The banya (Russian for bathhouse) centers on a traditional experience: intense heat from the saunas, followed by cold plunge pools, repeated until your body doesn’t know what temperature means anymore. A post-bathing cafe serves Russian karcho soup, Japanese dumplings, and other food to fuel recovery.

What to expect

Multiple saunas at varying temperatures, cold plunge pools, and outdoor relaxation areas. The heat in the Russian sauna is more intense than what you’ll find at a typical gym or spa. The cafe and chess meetups give the space a social dimension that most spas lack. Women’s Night (first Tuesday) and Men’s Night (third Tuesday) offer single-gender bathing.
