What you need to know

What’s There

A pair of giant fishnet-stocking legs in red high heels juts from the second-story window above Piedmont Boutique on Haight Street. Look up or you’ll walk right past them. The legs were installed in 1995, made by artists Barry and Kat of Back to the Drawing Board Signs.

Piedmont Boutique itself has been around since 1972, when Karl and Donna Kaupp opened the original location in the Castro. The shop moved to Haight Street in 1981 and to the current location shortly after. It sells costumes, wigs, platform shoes, and accessories. The Kaupps still own it, and about 80% of the merchandise is made in-house in San Francisco. San Francisco Heritage has designated Piedmont a Legacy Business.

The whole stop takes about 30 seconds, unless you go inside.
