The Verdict

"The rooftop is the main draw, but the ground-floor restaurant is the better meal. Go to the rooftop for drinks and views, then eat downstairs. Avoid game days unless you want the crowd energy."

What you need to know

Nikkei cuisine and a rooftop bar near Oracle Park

KAIYO is a Nikkei restaurant and rooftop bar at 701 3rd Street, inside the Hyatt Place Downtown. Nikkei cuisine blends Japanese technique with Peruvian ingredients and flavors, a tradition born from Japanese immigration to Peru in the late 1800s. The result is food that doesn’t fit neatly into one category: ceviches with yuzu, hand rolls with aji amarillo, empanadas with Japanese-braised beef.

There are three distinct spaces here. The ground-floor restaurant is the more composed dining experience. The 12th-floor rooftop bar is where most people end up on a nice evening, with skyline views and a more casual energy. There’s also a handroll bar for quick, focused meals.

What to order

The passion fruit pisco sour is the drink to start with. The salmon ceviche and bluefin tuna toast are strong starters. For rolls, the Lima Roll and Kaiyo Roll are the most popular. The nikomi beef empanadas bridge the Peruvian and Japanese sides of the menu well. For larger plates, the miso black cod and Hokkaido scallop udon are worth the price.

Rooftop bar

The 12th-floor rooftop is lush with greenery, soft lighting, and a tropical-inflected design that feels a world away from the SoMa streets below. It’s open daily starting at 4pm. Friday and Saturday nights run until midnight. The rooftop gets busy before Giants games since Oracle Park is a short walk away.

Getting there

The restaurant is in the South Beach area of SoMa, about a 10-minute walk from Montgomery BART. On Giants game days, expect the area to be busier than usual. Street parking is generally easier here than in other parts of SoMa, but the garage at the hotel is the safest bet.
