Cole Valley Is Getting Pasta Supply Co, a New Sushi Restaurant, and an Antique Store

Cole Valley has about a block and a half of shopfronts, and four new businesses are landing on it at once. A pasta shop, a sushi restaurant, an antique store, and a coffee shop are all either open since summer or due in the coming months.

What is opening

Pasta Supply Co, which already has locations in the Richmond and the Mission, is moving into the space that held a Peet’s Coffee for 12 years before it closed in January, the San Francisco Standard reported on September 3. Chef Anthony Strong, who runs Pasta Supply Co, lives in the neighborhood.

Kamekyo, a sushi restaurant that had been on the corridor for 28 years, closed this year. The Standard reports that the space will take a new concept from Jiro Lin, chef and owner of Hamano Sushi in Noe Valley, in the coming months.

Schatzgarten, an antique store, is due to open this month in a storefront on Parnassus just off Cole Street that a florist vacated in July. Owner Katie Humphries told the Standard she went to her first Cole Valley Merchants Association meeting a few weeks ago.

Double Black, a coffee shop and outdoor apparel store from the Cole Valley brand Yardsale, opened this summer in a former pharmacy. Cristina Ashbaugh and Kelly McGee started Yardsale in a Cole Valley garage in 2023. The Standard reports the shop offers free refills on drip coffee, which its owners describe as an attempt to serve both the customers who find it on TikTok and the neighbors who might assume the hojicha latte counter is not for them.

What was already there

The commercial strip runs a block and a half along Cole Street between Parnassus and Carl. The Standard counts nearly a dozen eateries, two coffee shops, a dry cleaner, a shipping store, a hardware store, an upscale grocer, a pet shop, a gym, and an urgent care center in that stretch.

Several of the businesses have been there for decades. Cole Hardware opened in 1920. The liquor store Val de Cole, a registered Legacy Business, has operated since the 1930s. Say Cheese, a deli and specialty food store, has been open 50 years, and so has the Irish pub Finnegans Wake, which the Standard says marks its 50th anniversary this month. Cole Valley Tavern, at Cole and Carl, was Kezar Bar & Restaurant until 2022; Jim Angelus has been an owner since 2018.

The more recent arrivals started with the salad chain Blue Barn, then Woods Beer and Wine Co. in early 2024, then the clothing boutique Rising Star Laundry. Simple SF, a zero-waste refill store that owner Abbe Hoenscheid opened on Carl Street in 2022, moved to Cole Street last year.

Where it is and how to get there

Cole Valley is roughly four square blocks between Haight-Ashbury to the north and the Inner Sunset to the west, on the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park. The N Judah runs through it, coming out of the Sunset Tunnel and stopping at Carl and Cole, which puts the corridor on one train from downtown.

That location is the reason the new businesses matter to visitors as well as residents. The corridor is a short walk from the Haight Street shops and from the park’s eastern entrance.
