City Lights Bookstoreは1953年、Columbus and Broadwayの三角形の建物でオープンし、Lawrence FerlinghettiとPeter D. Martinによって全米初のペーパーバック専門書店として創業された。Ferlinghettiは1956年にAllen GinsbergのHowlを出版し、1957年のわいせつ裁判は無罪判決に終わり、文学出版における合衆国憲法修正第1条の判例を確立した。
The Store
3フロアの書籍があらゆる場所を埋め尽くしている。2階のPoetry RoomはFerlinghettiがビート作家たちを編集・出版した場所で、棚の間には手書きのスタッフおすすめコメントが挟まれている。地下にはBeatコレクションがあり、初版本を含め、KerouacやGinsbergとその仲間たちの写真が壁に飾られている。朗読会や新刊発表会は2階で定期的に開催されている。Vesuvio CafeがJack Kerouac Alleyを挟んで隣にあり、ビート作家たちが利用していたのと同じバーである。City Lightsは2001年にサンフランシスコの史跡に指定された。

店はNorth BeachのColumbus and Broadwayにあり、近くには8、12、30の各路線とPowell-Masonケーブルカーがある。
