Orphan Andy’s

The Verdict

"Go at 2am on a Saturday for the real Orphan Andy's experience. Weekday mornings are quiet and the breakfast is solid either way."

What you need to know

Orphan Andy’s opened on 17th Street in the Castro in 1977. Owners Dennis Ziebell and Bill Pung have run it together since 1978 and have been a married couple for nearly as long. Booths, a counter, neon, and jukeboxes at every table. Decor that reads as 1950s diner without being a theme. The Castro’s late-night anchor for nearly fifty years.

The Food

All-day breakfast is the main draw. Pancakes, omelets, French toast, and the chicken-fried steak that earns its mentions. The Orphan Andy’s burger is the signature non-breakfast item. Milkshakes and malts made to order. The dessert case usually has Bailey’s Irish Cream cheesecake and double fudge brownies.

The Space

Compact, colorful, nostalgic. Counter seating for solo diners, booths for groups. The annual holiday decorations are a tradition.
