The Verdict

"Book the body scrub. That's the experience. Everything else is a nice bonus, but the scrub is what people talk about. Arrive the full 30 minutes early or you risk losing your slot."

What you need to know

A Korean bathhouse in Japantown

Pearl Spa is a women-only Korean-style jimjilbang in Japantown, and it’s earned a 4.8 rating across more than 1,300 Yelp reviews for a reason. The space is built around traditional Korean bathing culture: saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, clay rooms, and the body scrubs that are the real reason most people book.

The body scrub is the signature experience. A scrub technician exfoliates your entire body, and you leave feeling like you’ve shed a layer of skin (because you have). It’s intense, thorough, and not for the modest. The bathing areas are nude-only, no swimsuits. If that’s not your thing, this isn’t your spot.

Treatments and services

Beyond the body scrub, Pearl offers oil massages ranging from light to firm pressure, body wraps with seaweed gel, and milk and honey treatments. Every booked service includes two hours of amenity access (sauna, steam room, hot tubs, clay rooms), so build in time before or after your treatment to use the facilities.

Before you go

Appointments only. No walk-ins. Book online or call (415) 580-7142. You need to arrive and check in 30 minutes before your appointment time. Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance by texting (408) 314-3181. Don’t call the spa to cancel; they only accept cancellation texts at that number. No-shows get charged the full service fee.

Guests 13 and older are welcome (under 18 needs an adult). They add a 3% fee for credit card payments, so bring cash if you want to avoid it.
