Wicked: Part One in Concert Plays the Orpheum on January 16, 2027

The Orpheum Theatre will host a single performance of Wicked: Part One in Concert on January 16, 2027, a week before the show’s official premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The concert pairs the 2024 film with a full symphony orchestra playing the score live against the projection.

What the Show Is

This is a live-to-film concert rather than a stage production. The film runs on screen while an orchestra performs the John Powell and Stephen Schwartz score, including Schwartz’s songs from the original musical, in sync with the picture.

The tour is produced by Universal Pictures and Universal Destinations & Experiences with Hurwitz Concerts, the live-events company founded by composer Justin Hurwitz, whose previous orchestra tours were built around La La Land and Whiplash. A second concert series based on Wicked: For Good is also planned.

Why the Date Is in San Francisco

The Orpheum performance on January 16 is a preview stop ahead of the New York premiere on January 23, 2027, followed by Chicago on January 30. International dates announced so far run through 2027: Mexico City on March 6, Guadalajara on April 17, Monterrey on April 24, Toronto on May 29, Montreal on July 17, and Vancouver on July 24.

San Francisco has a specific claim on this material. Wicked had its pre-Broadway tryout at the Curran Theatre here, opening May 28, 2003 and closing June 29, with Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Norbert Leo Butz and Joel Grey in the cast, according to Playbill. The production was reworked after that run and opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003.

General public sales opened September 11, 2026 at 10am Pacific through Ticketmaster and the tour’s own site. ATG San Francisco subscribers had first access on September 9, and a Live Nation All Access presale ran on September 10. Prices had not been published at the time of the announcement.

Getting There

The Orpheum is at 1192 Market Street at Hyde, near Eighth Street. Civic Center/UN Plaza station, served by BART and by every Muni Metro line, is one block east.
