A.C.T.’s Toni Rembe Theater
The Verdict
"Pick Orchestra or Mezzanine. The Upper Balcony seats are tight, with a steep pitch."
What you need to know
The Toni Rembe is ACT’s roughly 1,000-seat main stage on Geary in Union Square, the building that opened in 1910 as the Columbia Theater, was badly damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and reopened in 1996 after six years of restoration.
What to Expect
This is where ACT stages its larger productions: classic plays, musicals, established contemporary work, with full sets and a professional cast. The interior is in the early-20th-century ornate style. Sightlines are good from most seats; orchestra center is the closest view, the mezzanine gives a wider angle, and the upper balcony is steep and farther back.
Getting There
Powell BART and Muni Metro is three blocks south. The 38 Geary runs past the front door.
