About The Castro
The Castro era un terreno agricolo noto come Eureka Valley nel corso del XIX secolo. Castro Street prende il nome da José Castro, un governatore dell’epoca messicana dell’Alta California. La Market Street Cable Railway raggiunse la valle nel 1887 e diede il via a un boom edilizio che riempì gli isolati con le case vittoriane ancora oggi esistenti. Per decenni fu un quartiere operaio, in gran parte scandinavo e irlandese. Il Castro Theatre, progettato da Timothy Pflueger, aprì su Castro Street nel 1922.
La zona divenne un quartiere gay tra la fine degli anni ’60 e l’inizio degli anni ’70. I militari congedati a San Francisco durante e dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale erano rimasti in città, gli affitti erano bassi e le case vittoriane abbondavano. I residenti gay acquistarono e restaurarono le case e aprirono attività commerciali lungo Castro Street.
Harvey Milk aprì Castro Camera al 575 Castro Street nel 1973 e gestì le sue campagne dal negozio. Nel 1977 fu eletto al Board of Supervisors, uno dei primi funzionari eletti apertamente gay del paese. Lui e il sindaco George Moscone furono assassinati a City Hall il 27 novembre 1978.
